Traditional Farm Buildings Grant Scheme
An annual grants scheme for the conservation and repair of traditional farm buildings and related structures.
With the radical changes in farming in the past half century, many of our traditional farm buildings have outlived their practical usefulness. Once the centre of farm activity, many of these buildings have fallen into a state of decay because their significant historical value and beauty is often and easily overlooked.
In recognition of the value of traditional farm buildings (and other related structures), The Heritage Council, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, administers an annual grants scheme to GLAS participants for their conservation and repair.
Our traditional farm buildings provide us with valuable information about how we lived, built, farmed and produced our food. They are a direct and tangible link to the past, and a testament to the skills, craftsmanship and back-breaking hard work of our parents, grandparents and previous generations.
They are monuments in the landscape that remind us of our childhood, where we came from, how we once worked and how far we’ve come. Many provide much-needed refuge for endangered wildlife.
Our farm buildings are a key part of our country’s rural and social history and one of the few tangible aspects of our great agricultural heritage. They are part of what we are. In maintaining them, respecting them, learning from them and enjoying them, we are preserving that heritage and history for future generations.
Grants under the Traditional Farm Buildings Grants Scheme are available for the conservation of traditional farm outbuildings including repairs to structure, roof, walls, windows and doors. Grant aid is also available for the repair of other related structures including historic yard surfaces, walls, gate pillars and gates.
Examples of works funded to date include repairs to slate and stone slate roofs, repairs to masonry, stonework and joinery, the repair and renewal of external doors and shutters, the renewal of decayed lintels and the addition of structural ties.
Grant amounts vary between €4,000 and €25,000. Farmers approved in the GLAS Scheme are eligible to apply.
