Summer Stars

Every summer across the public library network in Ireland, children are encouraged to continue to read for pleasure throughout the summer holidays.  Here at County Longford Library Service we host a reading challenge for children and deliver lots of fun literary events to encourage children to come to their local library and borrow a book.  Every child who registers for Summer Stars will receive rewards throughout the reading challenge.  At the end of the summer all children who give in their completed reading cards are entered into a draw for a voucher for a bike with the support of Longford Sports Partnership.

Each library has a wide and varied selection of books for children.  From the modern favourites such as Jeff Kinney, Meg Cabot, David Walliams and Michael Morpurgo, to the classics such as Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton, Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter – there’s something for everyone!  For children who like continuity in their reading choices we have series such as Beast Quest, Goosebumps, The Princess Diaries, Dork Diaries… the list goes on!  We also have varied non-fiction collections in the areas of sports, science, animals and the environment, as well as Literacy Tower graded readers and Barrington Stoke books for children who struggle with reading.
