Traditional Music in Co. Longford 

Dé Sathairn 17ú - Dé Domhnaigh 25ú

A poster exhibition running from 17th - 25th of August, this is the story of traditional Irish music in Longford featuring legendary local musicians of the county.

Ceiliúradh na bPíob, (a celebration of uileann pipes),

The history and development of Uilleann Pipes, information on pipe makers past and present, and a talk on Uilleann Piper, the late Peter Carberry, with a session by Pipers and friends.


Pocket Bog Monsters (Art Workshop)

Dé Luain19ú 11rn / Monday19th, 11am

Create your very own pocket bog monsters, each with special powers. Using recycled materials with art supplies, bring them to life! Age: five to 12 years (fifteen places). Dress for mess.

Art recycling workshop. Booking essential. Adult accompaniment required. First come, first served basis.


Dig Detectives (Archaeology Workshop)

Are you good at finding clues? Can you solve mysteries? If so, join our big bog dig at Corlea and help us solve a mystery. seven to 12 years (10 places). Free Workshop. Dress for mess.

Scéalta Caonach Cois Tine

Evening of story telling with Vincent Pierse, Seanchaí, alongside musicians, singers, recitations and traditional food tasting.


Midir & Etain's Fairy Art Workshop

Flower Fairies, Fairy Twirlers, Fairy Bells - Discover how to create some of Etains favourite fairy objects. Suitable for six to 12 year olds. Booking is required (fifteen places). Dress for mess.

Celtic Warrior Weapon-making

Create a Celtic tribal shield and sword .Learn about Celtic Warriors. Dress up for the Corlea Warrrier Battle. Suitable for children aged seven to 12 years.

Bog Nature Walk (WILD CHILD DAY)

Basketmaking with Eddie McGrath

Eddie McGrath will be giving demonstrations of traditional basket making. Eddie makes baskets from willow that he grows himself. Learn the techniques needed to make handwoven baskets.

Longford Rocks! with Matthew Parkes

An alternative view of our landmark Cathedral, appreciating the great variety of building and ornamental stones used in the original construction and in the restoration. Learn about the different rock materials, their sources and the skills need to work them. With Matthew Parkes, Geological Curator in the Natural History Museum, Dublin.

Exploring the Mall

Discover the history and ecological heritage of Albert Reynolds Peace Park, from earliest times to today. Help us find out the plant and animal species in the park in our mini BioBlitz!

Guest speakers, Martin Morris and ecologist Noreen McLoughlin, will explain the history of The Mall, the mills and industrial heritage along the River Camlin as well as the flora and fauna that make up the park to this day. We hope to do a mini-BioBlitz, and discover the range of species that live there.

An outdoor family-friendly event. Please dress for the weather. Please be aware that there may be photography/videography for use on Longford CoCo social media, websites and publications.

Planting for Pollinators at Pallas

Make the childhood home of poet Oliver Goldsmith more bee-friendly, by planting native plants, with Brendan Farrell of Ardagh Village Landscapes. This is a partnership project between Longford County Council, the Oliver Goldsmith Festival Committee and Longford Environmental Alliance, funded by the National Biodiversity Action Plan Fund. Family friendly.

Outdoor event - please wear appropriate outdoor clothing for gardening, including wellington boots and waterproofs. Gloves etc. advised.

How To Not Get Bored in the Past at Ardagh Heritage & Creativity Centre -

Explore 5000 years of stories, games, crafts and other activities that kept our ancestors busy in their time. How did they manage not to get bored without the technologies of today?

Enjoy the stories that Scéalta Beo, Ann and Annette, tell you of your ancestors, starting with their favourite, Midir and Etain. Play games from the times of the Tuatha Dé Danann up to the days of your grandparents. Try some crafts the people of Ireland did before they could shop online! Explore the gardens, be inspired by the exhibition and create something in our art room. The Craft Shop stocks over 50 local crafters, artists and writers and is open all day. Tea/Coffee, all materials provided. Family friendly.

Longford Rocks! 

Dé Sathairn 17ú, 2in, Baile Nua an Chaisil/ Saturday 17th, 2pm, Newtowncashel

 

Visit this fantastic community park with Mathew Parkes, Geological Curator in the Natural History Museum, Dublin to discover limestone rock, how it was extracted and what it was used for – including the most famous building in the county! See also the sculptural works in the Park and see how the character of the rock shapes the artist’s choices.

A second talk will take place at 4pm at St. Mel’s Cathedral the same day. This event is taking place to celebrate National Heritage Week and is being organised by the Longford Heritage Office in partnership with the Newtowncashel Tidy Villages Committee.
