Culture Night 2024 is taking place Friday, 20 September. See below for this year's events!

Events

Light Bank

Time and Venue: From 8.30pm at former Ulster Bank building, Main Street, Longford Town
Transforming the former Ulster Bank building into a canvas of light, the Light Bank creates a creating a mesmerising visual spectacle that celebrates the place of Longford as a vibrant town. Audiences will see a sequence of animations and visual narratives projected onto the front of the bank, telling a different story about the town's culture, its people and place. Presented by Longford Arts and Nighttime Economy Longford, in collaboration with artists Caroline Conway, Nathan Sheridan, Mary Fleming, Raymond Asiemo and Patrina Prunty. The projection venue will be the Longford Arms Hotel.

An Evening of Music with Joe Callaghan CCE

Time and Venue: 8-10pm at the Green or the Community Centre, Edgeworthstown
A concert of music from talented members of the Joe Callaghan CCE Branch, together with songs, dance and stories. Free workshops in Sean nos singing and dance and bodhran.

Athena Gallery

Time and Venue: 5-10pm, 40 Ballymahon Street, Longford Town
Athena Gallery will be hosting live art with a caricaturist and live trad music performed by the talented Noel Carberry and friends.
Funded through the Culture Night Late and Night Time Economy initiative of The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Babylon Inferno

Time and Venue: 9-10pm, Longford Town 
Annie Morton and her troupe of fire performers will be making appearances on the streets of Longford over the evening. Babylon Inferno are street circus performers who specialise in fire performance.
This event was funded through the Culture Night Late and Night Time Economy initiative of The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

Backstage Theatre presents Distillation

Time and Venue: 8-9pm, Temperance Hall, Longford
A performative journey which takes you to the Irish bog landscape through scent. Distillation is a response to the recent cessation of the peat harvesting industry in Ireland.
Supported by Goethe-Institut Irland, with additional development support by IMMA, Druid FUEL, NTE and Backstage Theatre’s Activate Residency programme.

Between the Veils

Time and Venue: 6-9pm, Menara Cafe
A photographic exhibition by Michael Croghan, Between the Veils is an exploration of realities in the everyday, with a focus on the fringes of place and the uncommon commonalities of local place in the midlands of Ireland, County Longford. Michael will be presenting the first showing of new work as part of this exhibition.

Bula Bula Samba Band

Time and Venue: throughout the evening, Longford Town
Bula Bula Samba Band is Longford's very own community percussion band. The group will be performing around the town on culture night - bringing with them music, craic and fun.

Culture Evening at Rath Mhuire

Time and Venue: 7.30-9pm, Rath Mhuire and Dolmen Resource Services, Granard
A night of music, poetry and storytelling. This event will promote the heritage and culture of North Longford through song and recital. We hope to make it a truly joyful occasion.

Echoes of Light and Shadow: A Luminary Art Exhibition

Time and Venue: from 7.30pm, Providers building, Main Street, Longford
Abba Wiercioch's art installation inspired by the legend of Midir and Etain.

Inter-cultural film screening

Time and Venue: 7-9pm, Edgeworthstown Library, Edgeworthstown
Special film screening exploring migration-related challenges in local communities and delivering a message of hope and solidarity. Hosted by Longford Community Resources Ltd. in association with Edgeworthstown Library and Creative Places Edgeworthstown.

Kenagh Culture Evening

Time and Venue: 7-10pm, Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre, Kenagh
Local musicians and volunteers from the Kenagh community are coming together to present an evening of music, poetry, storytelling and recitals in the beautiful surroundings of the Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre.

Live Art Making in the Square

Time and Venue: 4-10pm, Market Square
Artists Anna and Phil Atkinson bring to Longford a street art spectacle, paying homage to a tale from Irish mythology. The art will be rendered on a large wooden canvas over the afternoon and evening. 

Music by Fabiani

Time and Venue: 6-8pm, Fabiani
Sit down in the chilled surroundings of Fabiani Cafe and listen to the smooth Blues and jazz tones of Mick Lane. Support by Bonny and Bob.

Open Evening at The Maria Edgeworth Centre

Time and Venue: 7-10pm, Maria Edgeworth Centre
See a number of recent acquisitions in the Maria Edgeworth Centre which are culturally important to Longford, as well as an exhibition by Bernard Canavan on the subject of emigration from Longford in the 1950s.

Output

Time and Venue: 8-11pm, The Gaelic Corner (Huey Doyle's)
Output are a new up and coming four-piece rock band, that play an exciting mix of everyone's favourite rock songs, with members Amy Maguire, William Marlow, Harry Pearman Howard and Mateusz Janczewski.

Painting Words

Time and Venue: 7-10pm, Pig Market Lane
Visual art exhibition by Longford based artists accompanied by a recital of selected writings by Longford's writers group. Kindly facilitated by Red Dot Gallery.

Red Dot Gallery Art Exhibition and Jazz Night

Time and Venue: 7-10pm, Pig Market Lane
Red Dot Gallery Longford presents an evening of art and music in Longford's Pig Market Lane. Curated by artist Nick Barker, a selection of visual artists will present their work. Music will be provided by the jazz ensemble the Rodrigo Almonte Trio.
Also presenting work alongside the Red Dot Gallery will be Longford Writers Group.

Reels on the Bus

Time and Venue: 4.30-6pm, the Yellow Bus, Attic House
Reels on the Bus is an interactive traditional music workshop and live trad music session open to secondary school students in Longford.

The Culture Night Show

Time and Venue: 8-10pm, Longford Arms Hotel
Keenan Promotions presents a cultural variety show including music by Omen Ceol and Alex Sheridan. Exhibitions of rock crystals, semi-precious gem stones and cultural curiosities collected by Tom Keenan and an exhibition by Thomas Lynam Ceramics. Videography by world travelled expert Nathan Sheridan and Brian McCann.

The Gift

Time and Venue: 6-8pm, Mary's Meals charity shop, Connolly Barracks, Longford Town
An evening with Mary's Meals charity celebrating through an exhibition, art and music.

The Night Garden

Time and Venue: 7-10pm, Spirit clothing shop, Main Street, Longford
Artists Kevin and Stephanie Hanlon are creating a site specific installation inspired by characters from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The installation will be developed using sustainable materials and recycled objects.
