St. Patrick built the original church of Rathcline. St. James is the Patron, and his day is about Midsummer Day.
This parish is situated in, and occupies, the north portion of Rathcline Barony. It is surrounded by the ph. of Cashel in this barony; by the phs. of Kilcommock & Killashee in Moydow Barony; and by the phs. of Cloontuskert, Kilbride, and Kilteevan in Ballintobber Barony, Co. Roscommon. It contains 12,883 acres, which includes 1,820 acres of Lough Ree, 96 acres of Lough Bannow, and 93 acres of the River Shannon.
This parish lies E of Lough Ree and the Shannon. Its western part is well cultivated, but interspersed with patches of bog; it contains a gentleman's demesne and the town of Lanesborough. The greater part of the eastern portion is bog, with large patches of arable interspersed. In its northern part, most of which is bog, are two demesnes. The whole parish is well accomodated with road
