Book on the history of Longford Town Football Club set to launch

Four Pound Subsidy: The History of Longford Town 1924-2024 by author Seamus Leavy

Press Release: Monday, 7 October 2024

A book launch for Four Pound Subsidy: The History of Longford Town 1924-2024 takes place in Longford Library on Friday, 11 October at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Charting the history of Longford Town Football Club, the book is written by staunch Town supporter Seamus Leavy. The launch will be performed by Jim Hanley, Longford Town FC Chairperson. Fittingly the launch takes place exactly 100 years after the formation of the football club, which took place on 11 October 1924.

Offering a detailed account of the club's history, the book features many key people from throughout the years. It also includes a wealth of match reports and photographs. It is the result of hundreds of hours of painstaking research in newspapers and other sources by Ardagh native Seamus Leavy, who has been attending Longford Town FC games since he was a child.

Longford County Council provided funding towards this book through its small grants scheme for local books.

Speaking ahead of the launch, Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Mark Casey said, "It is wonderful and fitting that this book, which charts the history of Longford Town FC will be launched on the 100 year anniversary of the club. And there is no better person than staunch Town support Seamus Leavy to have written this excellent book. I congratulate Seamus and encourage everyone to pick up their copy."

Longford County Council Chief Executive Paddy Mahon added, "Longford Town FC has a unique place in sporting life of this county and this book is a great record of all its achievements and is a great achievement in itself being so thorough and well-written. It will be of interest to Longford people everywhere. Longford County Council is proud to have helped support this publication."
