Castle Rackrent by Maria Edgeworth

Celebrating the 250th anniversary since the birth of County Longford writer, Maria Edgeworth, this is a musical adaptation of a world renowned comic masterpiece.

A hilarious and raucous tale, full of music and dancing, based on Ireland’s greatest forgotten novel, written in Edgeworthstown just as the rebellion of 1798 was raging.

All the Rackrents bleed the people dry as they drink, carouse, gamble and duel their way into early graves in this comic satire. Their ‘loyal’ servant, Thady Quirk, tells their story with his tongue firmly in his cheek, protecting his undying loyalty to a collection of half-crazed alcoholics and sadists while presiding over their removal from their home and lands.

A community cast/choir will work in numerous capacities along with the professional Captain Moonlight ensemble to bring this masterpiece to the stage as part of the celebrations of Maria Edgeworth 250th Anniversary.

An unmissable show full of specially written songs, sean nós singing and dancing with scenes of high comedy and casual cruelty.
