Longford County Council launches Art Summer Camps for teens

Longford Arts partners with locally based artist for camps

Longford County Council is delighted to confirm that Longford Arts has teamed up with locally based artist Anna Wiercioch to put on a series of art camps for teenagers in July.

Anna, who trained as an art teacher in Poland is based in Lough Gowna and has been facilitating art workshops for programmes such as Cruinniú na nÓg and Art in Schools. She is excited to be leading these camps which are for all teenagers who are in secondary school. “It’s not just for teens who are really creative or gifted at drawing,” she said, “it’s really for any teenager who likes art, who has the time and wants to try something different this summer.”

Acting Arts Officer for County Longford Shane Crossan says, “There are very few creative opportunities for teenagers over the summer here in Longford and we’re trying to change that. Supporting new ideas like this one will hopefully engage more young people in art making and creativity in the longer term.”

Longford County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr Turlough McGovern said “Increasing creative outlets for young people is a wonderful initiative and I’m delighted to see Anna working in partnership with Longford Arts Service to make it happen.”

Chief Executive Paddy Mahon said, “This is another demonstration of how Longford County Council is committed to supporting the future of the arts in County Longford.”

Classes are small and participants will get to experiment with different art materials and explore new skills such as printing, lantern making, and fabric painting using acrylics and water colours.

The art camps will run throughout the month of July over the following dates:

  • Ballymahon Community Library: 4 July to 7 July
  • Lus na Gréine, Granard: 11 July to 14 July
  • Connolly Barracks, Longford: 18 July to 21 July.

The classes will start at the later time of 11am to facilitate that all important summer-time rest!

Camps cost €50 per student and that includes access to materials and equipment.
